This research group has conducted extensive research in the following areas.
- The Greater Mekong Sub Region (GMSR)
The GMSR in terms of social and economic development, with particular emphasis on the role of the Asian Highway Network in promoting development and further structuring the spread of globalization in the region.
- Special Economic Zones
We will study the current expansion of the strategic promotion of special economic zones (SEZs) in Thailand and the GMSR to identify best practices, modes of governance and their role in promoting state-level developmental goals through the Factory Asia paradigm and beyond.
- China–AEC Conundrum
Research is being undertaken to understand how all sides can take advantage of the increasing role of China in the GMSR in the era of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). What will be the impact of China’s ‘One Road; One Belt (‘Land and Maritime Silk Roads’) projects on trade and investment prospects in the GMSR and how will these affect social and international relations? An additional focus is on the cultural, legal and technical aspects of expediting the flow of goods, services, and people in and around AEC through the AEC-China corridors.
